Renovating a 1970 octagonal home on Captiva Island

Captiva Drive is a whole-home renovation by Kelly General Contracting on Captiva Island, Florida. The house is an octagon: built in 1970 on a wooded 1.1-acre lot on the bay side of Captiva Drive, it has 1,280 square feet of living space under a single eight-sided roof, with an open loft ringed around a central steel column and a cupola at the peak. KGC renovated the interior around that structure, with a new kitchen, an open steel staircase and cable railing to the loft, new bathrooms, and new flooring and finishes throughout, while leaving the timber rafters, plank ceilings and red column exposed as the centerpiece of the house.

A kitchen shaped by the octagon

The kitchen sits beneath the loft on one side of the octagon. White flat-panel cabinets run floor to ceiling beside a stainless French-door refrigerator, and a white quartz island with a large undermount sink faces into the room. A second run of quartz follows the angle of the walls toward the sliding glass doors, so the sink looks straight out at the water, with floating shelves lit from underneath above it. The cooking wall is built around a Wolf dual-fuel range with its signature red knobs, and the kitchen floor is laid in a herringbone pattern of white oak.

The loft, the column and the cupola

A steel staircase with open treads and black cable railing climbs from the kitchen to the loft, which wraps around the middle of the house and stays open to the room below on every side. Overhead, weathered timber rafters radiate out from the center under a whitewashed plank ceiling, and a band of clerestory windows runs around the walls just below the roofline. At the heart of it all, a red steel column rises from the floor to the peak of the roof, where a ring of cupola windows lets daylight down through the middle of the house like the lamp room of a lighthouse.

Two bathrooms, two kinds of tile

The main bathroom pairs a white-tiled walk-in shower with a mosaic-lined niche and a white double vanity carrying two vessel sinks, brushed bronze faucets and a pair of scalloped mirrors set against a fish-scale marble mosaic. The second bath is built around a shower wall of blue and gray ginkgo-leaf mosaic with a long recessed niche behind a frameless glass panel. Elsewhere, a high-gloss navy floating vanity sits over marble-look porcelain, bringing a single strong color into an otherwise white and pale-oak palette.

On the lot

From the air, the house reads exactly as it was designed: an eight-sided roof with the cupola at its tip, a flat-roofed wing alongside and a dock reaching out from the bay side of the lot, with mangroves and tropical hardwoods all around and the Gulf visible across the island.

An octagonal house with a steel column and a cupola is not something you renovate by the book. The job was to give it a modern kitchen and bathrooms without losing the roof, the rafters or the light that comes down through the middle of it.

Common questions about this renovation

What was included in the Captiva Drive renovation?

A whole-home interior renovation of a 1,280-square-foot octagonal house on Captiva Island: a new kitchen with a white quartz island and a Wolf range, an open steel staircase and black cable railing to the loft, two remodeled bathrooms with mosaic tile walls and new vanities, and new white oak flooring and finishes throughout. The exposed timber rafters, plank ceilings, cupola and central red steel column were kept as the centerpiece of the house.
